RIFS conducts research with the goal of understanding, advancing, and guiding processes of societal change towards sustainable development.

The research approach is transformative, transdisciplinary, and co-creative: RIFS researchers collaborate with diverse actors from science, policymaking and public administration as well as business and civil society to develop a common understanding of sustainability challenges and generate potential solutions.

In addition, the institute is a leader in developing deliberative methods and participatory formats for policymaking. A strong network of national and international partners supports the work of the institute.

Its central research topics include the energy transition, climate change, air quality, systemic risks, governance, digitalisation and sustainable economies.
