REAL DEAL
As the European Union enters a new institutional cycle, this report outlines the critical role of civil society in shaping the future of the European Green Deal (EGD) and the broader sustainable development agenda. Drawing from the 9th Civil Society Forum for Sustainability held in November 2024, it reflects on key outcomes from nine thematic workshops that brought together over 70 civil society organisations from across Europe and beyond.
The brief covers priority areas such as deliberative democracy, economic justice, gender equality, decolonisation of decarbonisation, intergenerational equity, and the well-being economy. It makes bold calls for the EU to strengthen participatory democracy, embed social justice in economic governance, and build a truly inclusive and sustainable green transition.
It also warns against the risks of reducing climate ambition under the guise of competitiveness and urges the new European Commission to centre people and the planet over profits in the 2024–2029 mandate.
